QAYG... Quilt As You Go

Happy Birthday to ME!! I am 39 today... Where has the time gone?  So my husband took our 3 & 6 year old out food shopping and our baby is sleeping and I am Sewing and Quilting!!

I am a huge fan of MAUREEN CRACKNELL HANDMADE's Blog.  I do not know her and am in no way compensated for anything I am writing about, I am just a HUGE fan! Her Blog is so creative and a wonderful resource of beautiful quilts, pillows, fabric & technique.  Her story is a very inspiring story for someone who is learning how to quilt, then begins to master the art, and then has the ability to take it to the next level.  Currently, she has even designed her own fabric line, Fleet & Flourish, which is beautiful and it will be in stores soon.  I have to say, as a stay at home mom who loves to quilt and would love to make this a business for myself, just like she did.  I was so excited to see Pictures on Maureen's blog of her Booth all decorated with her products at a recent Quilt Expo.  If you go to Maureen Blog every Friday she does a fabric giveaway from some really great fabric companies The Knotted Thread, Intrepid Thread, Llama Fabrics & Aurafil Threads.. to name a few.  That in itself is exciting to enter and then check out her weekly projects and then see who wins on Tuesday's.  I have been entering weekly for 2 years and I still have not won... yet! lol..

Following her blog is a reminder to me that if you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life.  Having a son with Autism, I need to stay at home, but I would love to be able to make some extra money doing what I love. You have to go to and purchase her QAYG class that she teaches for $29.00 .  She shows you how to make a Place mat, A Table Runner, A Lap Quilt and a Full Size Quilt all by using a QAYG - Quilt As You Go Method.  I have to say, I kept reading about making quilts and projects with this method, but I couldn't figure out exactly how to do it.  I learn best by reading and then re-reading with a visual.  So, after watching this class,I grasped the concept quickly and it is a pretty cool way to make a simple quilt or project quickly.  It eliminates a few steps from Quilting Traditionally.  Very Cool and you HAVE to try it!  I thought the best part about QAYG, is when you sew your strips to the cotton batting, it lays so flat without having to press it.  Here is my attempt at trying to create a quilt using the Quilt As You Go method and I have not pressed these blocks yet, but you can see how flat they lie.
I am really excited about how this is going to turn out.  I am not sure if I am going to keep these as 10 inch Blocks or cut them into triangles?  I am still designing how I want my quilt to look.  I am going to write to Maureen and ask her if I can use a pic or two from her site to show you how beautiful her quilts turn out!  Or Better yet, go visit her site and tell you that Diary Of A Novice Quilter sent you... Maybe I will get a follow back?

Autism and the First Day of Kindergarten...

The only problem I seem to have lately is I have no time to sew, which, is a nice problem to have!  Juggling 3 kids now, is tough, especially with a newborn. But, luckily my husband is a rock star and jumps in and goes above and beyond to help.

My son has Autism and is starting a Special Needs Kindergarten Class and Addisyn is starting Preschool.. My babies are growing up so fast.  The incredible news is Tyler LOVES his school, his teacher and Aides. Phew.... he also has an anxiety disorder that makes new situations extremely difficult and I mean EXTREMELY.  My poor little guy is non-verbal so he can't fully tell me how he feels.

I started stressing out about him going to Kindergarten last fall when he went back to Preschool. My husband and I were sick all year knowing he was going into Kindergarten and he was going to have to go to a new school with new teachers and new friends. I had even suggested holding him back I was so scared.  I thought this was going to be a nightmare.  My husband was having nightmares about the transition and how Tyler was going to handle it.  I would just cry.  It took us so long to get him to be comfortable at his Special Needs Preschool.  After being there for 3 years he still wouldn't stay past 11:00am.  He wouldn't walk down the hallway past his classroom. It took him all year to work up the courage to walk into and thru the library to go to the speech room, instead of his speech teacher coming to his class.  And now we have to start all over again in a new school, with new surroundings and new people.

After a few meeting with his new teacher, aides, principal, OT Therapist & Speech Therapist along with all of his old team of people, we made his IEP and plan for the new adventure of Kindergarten.  The school was so accommodating, we started him out with half days and he starts later than everyone else, so he can avoid the crowds.  There is even a door that goes directly into the classroom that we have special permission for and are allowed to use, along with a special parking spot.  So Tyler doesn't have to walk thru any hallways or deal with crowds.  We made sure we acted like it was just another day at school... That means no pictures, no making a big deal about it at all.  My husband took him and I sat home with the girls in fear worrying and waiting to get a text from my husband.  My husband calls me... Tyler walked right in and sat down and never looked back!  What, I said.. No Way. Yep, my husband said...Tyler loves school, absolutely loves it.  He is terrified of hallways and going into rooms and through doorways... At the end of the week his teacher tells me that Tyler is the line leader for the class in the hallways. He goes to music and art and even holds the door open for all the other kids in the class..  I was in SHOCK!  I was so thrilled I teared up.  I never expected him to do so well.  He is even singing songs and you can understand his words.  He makes me so proud and has come such a long way.  He is such a love and now, he is going to be 6 next week.... My big boy.

Savanna Is Here!!!

I have been so busy lately, but, our newest edition came 3 weeks early on June 28.  I went into labor at 1:30pm and had her at 3:46pm.  Crazy, crazy natural birth.  We are so happy and excited that Savanna is here. She truly looks like the Gerber Baby.  Her big brother and sister love her so much.  I was really nervous about her siblings being jealous, but, they are wonderful and love their sister!

What a fantastic idea!  Hosted by Vicki at 2 Bags Full.  I stumbled upon her Blog by way of Vals Quilting Studio.  I am so excited to get involved with this.  I am new to the Blogging world and am still trying to figure out all of these linked up parties.  I look at all of these other blogs and see how many followers all these people have... I want my blog to be like that.  With 2 small children and one on the way I want something to be passionate about.  As I am learning to Quilt and Sew I thought what a great idea to Blog about.  I can't be the only person out there that is just starting to Quilt?  Why not write about my adventure. That is how I started my Blog.  My New Years Resolution is to get more involved with my Blog and the Blog World.  The perfect way to start is by participating in the Grow Your Blog Party!!

So Much Going On...

So, I have to admit I am really trying to get myself to really focus on Blogging.  I love reading everyone Else's Blogs and seeing what they are making.   However, I have just been in a funk these past few months.  My beautiful cousin passed away at 51, after battling Breast Cancer for 10 Years.  She was the most beautiful, loved, charismatic & wonderful mother to ever walk the face of the earth.  It was and still is so devastating, especially with the holidays coming up.  My cousin Maggie could Light up a room whenever she walked in...  I am still grieving and it makes it really hard to focus...  That is my Maggs in the Middle, and to the right with the dark hair is my sister and then Maggie's daughter and my cousin Francesca...  The guy in the white shirt is a Waiter who accidentally photo bombed our pic (lol).  What I wouldn't do to go back to that time in our lives.  Now, I am trying to use my grief to help me to be a better, more productive person... And it starts with my quilting and trying to learn to be a phenomenal quilter and sewing enthusiast!
Have a Wonderful Day!
XO... Valerie
